Earlier, on May 29 government announced a scheme for children who have lost both parents to COVID-19. Children will be supported under ‘PM-CARES for Children’.
According to the report of PTI, The Women and Child Development Ministry has proposed monthly stipend given to children who lost their parents to the pandemic be increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000, the official said. The official said a proposal may go to the Cabinet for approval in the next few weeks.
3250 applications have been received under the scheme, out of which 667 are approved by district magistrates concerned, according to ministry data. Applications have been received from 467 districts till now, the dats shows.
Earlier, it was seen that many state governments ensured support to children who lost their parents during Covid-19. Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of Delhi, announced on May 28 that relief of ₹50,000 will be given to the families of people who died of Covid-19, free education and monthly stipend of ₹2,500 till the age of 25, for those who have lost their parents in COVID-19. The DCPCR (Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights) said that atleast 2,029 children are there in the city who have lost their one or both parents during the pandemic, till june.
Later on Rajasthan government also announced financial package for children who lost a parent. Up government also rolled out the scheme of a monthly financial assistance for children orphaned by COVID-19. According to the reports, around 5,331 children in Maharashtra lost at least one parent over the past 14 months, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In june, Maharashtra government announced a financial scheme for such children. Now, central government has also announced to increase to the stipend given to orphan children.
In June, Supreme court was informed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) that as many as 30,071 children lost one or both of their parent due to COVID-19 according to the data submitted by states till 5 June, says NCPCR.
Now, the central government is planning to increase the monthly financial support given to children who lost their parents to COVID-19 from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000, a senior official said on Tuesday.
