The word ‘LGBT’ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. The LGBT sex education is the sex education initiative in a community center, school, or university that conveys important sexual well-being arguments between LGBT groups.
In India, the strife about whether LGBT sex education should be considered in sex education modules. Proponents of the LGBT community stated that LGBT matter in sex education subjects would help bring down homophobia and lessen homophobic bullying. It will increase social acceptance towards them and work to better the well-being of the LGBT people. It will undoubtedly lower various mental issues like low self-esteem, depression, identity crises, etc.
Bullying associated with sexuality and gender has been proceeding in Indian schools and hostels for prolonged. Inflexible beliefs in sexuality and gender that teens perceive in their early years shoot up into ignorance and bullying against those who seem different.
What can be done in order to give more support to the LGBT community?
Along with the cancellation of Section 377 of the Indian Panel Code, which was done in 2018, it is essential to unfold the space for spirited discussions in the school’s classrooms. Teachers and Educators can play a very significant role in creating and encouraging this awareness.
- Plan LGBT- inclusive Curriculum that includes a positive representation of them
Plan a curriculum that recognizes the existence of LGBT people and presents them in a positive light. This can actually will create a tremendous constructive effect on LGBT students. I will help them understand that they shouldn’t be ashamed of who they are and also not alone in the world. It will also motivate straight and cis students to voice up against homophobic bullying.
- Be Mindful of Interactions with parents of LGBT students
For some LGBT students, school is much more secure than their own home. They may be expressive about their sexuality at school without making their parents aware of it. While meeting their parents, be careful of sharing any information that can later bother or make that student’s home situation worsen.
- Actively intervene when you hear anti-LGBT remarks, both with students and staff
Homophobic’s comments and behavior can significantly impact the LGBT students’ mental, emotional, and physical health in a school. When staff or teachers step in circumstances that make LGBT students feel uncomfortable to threaten, they force them to realize that they are not alone and their emotions and health are also valued like every other human being.
- Remember that you don’t know that who in your class is LGBT
Educators who are themselves a part of the LGBT community may recognize LGBT students who may nudge them to their own younger selves. It is crucial to identify the LGBT students who require our assistance, although we may not be aware of them. We have no way of recognizing how anybody in a class truly recognizes. We must focus on making our school, class, education department secure for them and do a proper study in understanding LGBT youth.
