As the nation prepares for the celebrations of Independence Day coming up on the 15 of August, the Hindi film industry, better known as Bollywood is looking to revive itself after a disastrous one and a half year of loss due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bollywood would be looking to ride on the waves of patriotism of Independence day as Akshay Kumar is taking the big risk of releasing his new film Bell Bottom right after Independence day on the big screen. This would be a litmus test for all the upcoming Bollywood films too as it would indicate whether the audiences are ready to come back to the theatres to enjoy their favourite stars on the big screen or not.
Bell Bottom created a buzz last year when it became the first film in the world to start and wrap up shooting amid the pandemic in just 40 days. Finally, it is going to be released on the 19th of August nationwide. The Ranjit M Tewari directorial featuring Akshay Kumar along with Lara Dutta, Vaani Kapoor and Huma Qureshi is a spy thriller based on true events of the 1984 Indian Airlines plane hijack and is produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani, and Nikkhil Advani.
The other movies releasing on independence day are Shershah and Bhuj: The Pride of India.
Bhuj: The Pride of India is not getting a big-screen release, rather it is taking the OTT route and will release on Disney+Hotstar on the 13th of August. Starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Nora Fatehi, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharad Kelkar is set up in the Bhuj with the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. The film follows IAF Squadron leader Vijay Karnik (Devgn) who ensured India’s victory by re-constructing the Bhuj airbase along with the help of 300 women from a local village in Madhapar.
Shershah on the other hand is being released on 12th August on Amazon Prime. It is a biopic of Captain Vikram Batra who laid down his life for India fighting in the 1999 Kargil War. Siddharth Malhotra plays the role of Captain Batra and his twin in the movie. The movie also has Kiara Advani playing the love interest of Captain Batra. The film is named after the code name of the captain, i.e. Shershah.
Only time will tell the fate of these movies but one thing is sure that the Bollywood is trying to encash patriotism around independence day.
