Amazon founder and one of the world’s richest person Jeff Bezos is in the news throughout the year. He was in the headlines last month when he took his maiden space flight in his company- Blue Origin’s spacecraft. When he returned to earth he thanked all the amazon employees and every customer of Amazon for funding his space trip.
His thanks, no matter with how much good intention hasn’t gone down well the Americans as this has now stirred up a debate of rich v/s poor and the ever-increasing income inequality in the capitalistic United States of America.
When he landed back on earth he said, “I want to thank every Amazon employee and every Amazon customer because you guys paid for all of this,” and added, “So seriously, for every Amazon customer out there, and every Amazon employee, thank you from the bottom of my heart, very much. It’s very appreciated.”
His comments at that time got a bit of resistance and backlash but ever since then it has snowballed into people canceling their Prime Membership as they criticize Bezos over his statement being “tone deaf”.
People took to social media to show their anger and disappointment over Jeff Bezos ‘rubbing it’ by thanking them.
A user ever said that Bezos should give all Amazon Prime subscribers a ticket on his space flight, as “a freebie considering we paid for you to go to space!”.
Another user wrote, “After some major self-reflection, I have come to the conclusion that Amazon does not match my own values. I have decided to cancel my prime membership and invite others to do the same”.
Bezos is often accused of him using unethical business tactics to crush small businesses and even lobbying with the government. Entrepreneur and his rival Elon Musk tweeted yesterday that, “If lobbying and lawyers could get you to orbit, Bezos would be on Pluto right now.”
Bezos and his brother along with two other people went on an 11-minute space trip on 20th July in Blue Origin’s spacecraft as a test launch before his company began commercial operations to take astronomers and other wealthy space enthusiasts on private trips.
