Every year the 15th of August is celebrated with great enthusiasm, and fervour by every Indian as it marks our independence from the 200 years of British colonial rule.
This year’s celebrations were special as this was our 75th Independence day and as the tradition goes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag on the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi followed by an address to the nation.
In the almost 90 minutes speech this year, PM talked about a lot of topics ranging from economy, infrastructure, agriculture to the Atma Nirbhar Bharat and social welfare schemes launched in the past few years. This year he congratulated the sportspersons who won medals in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics and paid tribute to Covid warriors along with laying out his vision for the next 25 years and what his government is going to do in the near future.
Here are the big announcements this year
- Gati Shakti Yojana
This is a Rs 100-lakh crore national infrastructure master plan. The mission aims to give an integrated and holistic pathway to the Indian economy. By breaking silos within the economy, the mission aims to make local entrepreneurs globally competitive.
- 75 Vande Bharat trains in 75 weeks
One of the major highlights was the announcement of the PM’s speech as he announced that 75 ‘Vande Bharat’ trains will connect different parts of the country in 75 weeks. Vande Bharat is an indigenous semi-high speed train.
- Sainik Schools now open for girls
In a welcome move, girl cadets will now be able to enter all-boys Sainik Schools from the academic session 2021-22. Sainik Schools Society is run by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which prepares students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA).
- National Hydrogen Mission
PM Modi announced the National Hydrogen Mission with the aim of making India the global production hub for clean hydrogen fuel production and export along with making India self-reliant in clean energy and create new jobs.
- Fortified Rice
To reduce prevalent malnutrition amongst the poor and help improve the health of women and children in low-income families, PM announced that all rice distributed through government schemes will be fortified with nutrients. This will include rice in the public distribution system and midday meal schemes.
- E-commerce platform for Self-Help Groups
For self-help groups, the Prime Minister today announced an e-commerce platform. He said more than eight crore women in the villages are associated with Self-Help Groups and they design top-end products.
