The schedule for the polls in Uttar Pradesh has been released by the Election Commission on Saturday (January 8, 2022). On Saturday, the Election Commission released the schedule for the elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“We aim to conduct COVID-safe elections in five states with maximum voter participation with extensive preparations,” Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said as coronavirus cases rise across the country. On February 10, the first phase of UP polls will take place, followed by the second phase on February 14. The third phase is scheduled on February 20 and on February 23, the fourth phase will take place. The fifth on February 27, the sixth phase on March 3 and the seventh phase on March 7.
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly has a total of 403 seats, with 202 being the majority mark. These 403 constituencies are distributed across seven broad regions West UP (44 constituencies), Ruhelkhand (52), Doab (73), Awadh (78), Bundelkhand (19), East UP (76) and North East UP (61).
On March 10, the result of Uttar Pradesh assembly polls will be declared. Currently, UP is ruled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with Yogi Adityanath in power.
Last month, the Allahabad High Court in Uttar Pradesh asked the EC and PM Modi to delay the election by a couple of months, due to the increasing threat of Omicron virus.
