Four farmers were killed during a violence in Lakhimpur Kheri. Lakhimpur Kheri is a district of Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday, eight people were killed which included four farmers. As per the senior police officer in Lucknow posted at police headquarters, farmers were protesting the way of UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. He was going for visit to Banbirpur village.
On the afternoon of Sunday, eight people were killed when a jeep came on speed over the farmers who were protesting. As per police officials, the jeep ran over the eight people dragging them to death.
Leader of BKU (Bhartiya Kisan Union), Rakesh Tikait claimed that farmers who were protesting were attacked because they were protesting against the three farm laws. He further mentioned that people were opened fire on the farmers. During all this violence, some people died and many of them were injured.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was arrested when she was on the way to meet the families of victim. She has been arrested from Hargaon on Monday. When Priyanka Gandhi reached Lucknow she was stopped by the police several times. Party has released several videos claiming the same.
Priyanka Gandhi, Congress general secretary and UP in-charge, tweeted, “How much hatred BJP harbours against farmers in the country? Don’t they have a right to live? If they raise their voices, then you will open fire on them? Run them over by vehicles? Enough is enough…This is the country of farmers, and not a fiefdom of BJP ideology…Farmers’ satyagrah will get stronger, farmers’ voice will get louder.”
Yogi Adityanath said that the incidence was “unfortunate”, and “action will be taken against whoever is responsible.”
Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath, said in tweet, “The incident that happened in Lakhimpur Kheri district is very sad and unfortunate. @UPGovt Will go into the bottom of the causes of this incident and expose the elements involved in the incident and take strict action against the culprits.” He appealed people to maintain peace in the area and not to spread rumours. He said “There is an appeal to all the people of the area not to be misled by anyone and contribute in maintaining peace and order on the spot. Wait for the on-the-spot investigation and action before jumping to any conclusion.”
Akhilesh Yadav, president of Samajwadi Party, tweeted in hindi that running over farmers who were peacefully protesting the farm law (three new central farm laws) by the son of a Union minister of state was inhuman and cruel…UP will not tolerate atrocities by arrogant BJP members…and if this state of affairs continue then in UP BJP members will not be able to travel in vehicles or get out of them.
Akhilesh said in his another tweet said that he could speak a bit to the seriously hurt farmer leader Tejender Singh Virk…the government should give him best of medical treatment…and there’s only one demand— that the chief minister should resign.
As per the information gathered from a local police official, the violence was done just before Keshav Prasad Maurya, UP deputy chief minister was going for a visit to Banbirpur village under police station limits of Tikonia. The farmers blocked the road by protesting on it. The whole incident happened on Tikonia-Banbirpur road. Farmers wanted to block the visit of deputy CM and got more angry when two cars of BJP workers ran over them, injuring many people. Farmers retaliated by setting the cars on fire.
Keshav Maurya was going to inaugurate an annual wrestling competition. The competition is organized by Kheri MP and Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni, Union minister of state for home.
After the incident took place, internet services were temporarily shut in the district.
