In a bid to kill the perpetrator of the Kabul Airport suicide bombings, the US military carried out drone airstrikes on a car. An American official said that the drone strike blew up a vehicle carrying “multiple suicide bombers” who were associated with Afghanistan’s Islamic State- Khorasan affiliate on Sunday before they could further attack and jeopardise the ongoing military evacuation at Kabul’s international airport.
The airstrike came just 2 days before the 31st August deadline of the US’s exit from Afghanistan, ending the longest war in the history of the USA spaning for over 20 years.
An Afghan official said three children were also killed in the strike including many other civilians as the strikes took place in a residential area of Kabul.
The U.S. Central Command said in a statement that the U.S. is aware of reports of the deaths of civilians and is currently assessing the results of the strike. the spokesman for Central Command, Navy Capt. William Urban said that “substantial and powerful” subsequent explosions resulted from the destruction of the vehicle, which may have caused additional casualties.
A relative of one of the dead families in the airstrike said that they were “an ordinary family,” and added that “We are not ISIS or Daesh and this was a family home — where my brothers lived with their families.”
The Taliban has said that as soon as they get control of the Kabul airport when the US military leaves on 31st August, they would allow normal travel. The U.S. State Department has also released a statement signed by the NATO, EU and around 100 other countries, saying they had received “assurances” from the Taliban that people with travel documents would still be able to leave the country.
Meanwhile, India is also carrying out its own evacuations and till now has been able to evacuate almost all of its citizens from the war-torn country.
