After a conscious and electric performance on the final day of the second test match at Lord’s, team India managed to beat the hosts England at the iconic home of cricket often called the Mecca of cricket. This means that the visitors now take the lead of the 5 match series by 1-0 with 3 more matches to go. The first match at Nottingham was drawn after the 5th day was washed off due to rain. In that match too India looked to be in a commanding position.
Being put in to bat first after losing the toss, Indian openers Rohit and Rahul batted in tough overcast conditions with the ball swinging in the air. The duo put up a great show of batting and the latter even scored a century, etching his name on the Lord’s Honours Board. India scored a total of 364 in the first inning with England taking a lead of 27 by scoring 391 and their captain Joe Root did the majority of the scoring as he had 180 not out to his name at the end of the innings.
In the second innings, Indian batsmen didn’t look in shape as India lost both the openers and captain Kohli early on. Pujara and Rahane then held their ends and stabilized the innings.
At the beginning of the final day, English bowlers struck early and at one point India were only 209 for the loss of 8 wickets and tailenders Shami and Bumrah at the crease. Both are not known for their batting but with the spirit of fighting which the captain Kohli’s side endorses, the duo added an unbeaten 89 runs for the 9th wicket partnership, the highest ever for India. The English appeared to have surrendered in front of Shami-Bumrah and they both kept on scoring, taking India’s lead to 271 and eventually declaring the innings just after lunch.
England whose spirits and energy were already down had to chase the target of 272 in 60 overs, a humongous target for them and they were playing to save the test match by drawing it. But Indian bowlers had something else in their minds, they took all the 10 wickets in just under 52 overs for 120 runs eventually winning the match for India by 151 runs.
English captain Joe Root who scored 33 runs 2nd innings said “There are things we can take from this game. We’re used to playing five-match series. Important not to panic and stay calm. So good to have the crowds back to sporting arenas in general.”
The 5th day was full of altercations and banter between the players of both teams and talking on that, Player of the Match KL Rahul said, “We don’t mind some banter. You go after one of our guys and all XI of us will come back,” highlighting the never say never attitude of this team.
