WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram owned by Mark Zuckerberg went down on Monday late in the evening. All the apps went dark at around 9:30 pm and returned after 6 hours. This outage is considered as one of the biggest outage globally. Lakhs of users were unable to use WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. Users switched to twitter to report the issue. It is believed that the servers of these three apps crashed.
Facebook showed the message on the screen, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”
Mainly messaging platforms were affected. People weren’t able to send or receive messages on Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Outage impacted millions of people. AFP and Reuters confirmed that outage is faced by everyone.
Candid Wüest, Acronis’s VP of Cyber Protection Research, said regarding the global outage, “While there’s no confirmation on what caused the incident from Facebook Inc, it’s possible that the issue lies with the BGP or DNS protocol – which happen to be popular targets among cyber criminals…. Depending on what service is attacked – for example, if it’s a central authentication server shared between multiple brands, like in this case, then such a single outage can lead to multiple brands going offline. To be fair, we must note that most commonly such outages are caused by non-malicious actions – suspect it to be the case here too.”
Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram issued a statement on twitter . WhatsApp tweeted, “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.”
Facebook said, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Instagram posted, “Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we’re on it! #instagramdown.”
The problem was caused due to BGP routing. The outage cost Mark Zuckerberg 7 billion. It is rightly said that “Time is money.” Within 6 hours, Mark lost 7 billion. Before this outage, Zuckerberg was on the fifth position, but after this outage, he falls down to the fifth position. This was one of the longest-term outages. Stocks of Facebook also fall down by 5%.
Mark Zuckerberg posted, “Sorry for the disruption today — I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.”
According to the data shared by Indian government, there are 53 crore users of WhatsApp, Facebook users are 41 crore and 21 crore users are of Instagram.
