After venturing into online payments, electric vehicles, space exploration, satellite communication, solar energy, public transport, tunnel boring and even flamethrowers, Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk seems to be living in a futuristic sci-fi movie as on the occasion of Tesla AI (Artificial Intelligence) Day, he announced on Thursday that the car manufacture will probably launch the prototype of a humanoid robot called “Tesla Bot” next year and added that the robot would “eliminate dangerous, repetitive, boring tasks.”
He also announced that the Tesla Bot will use most of the tools that are used in Tesla vehicles such as sensors, cameras and various other tools to navigate the outside world.
Telling further about the humanoid, he said that it will bear the height of an average human i.e it will be around 5 foot 8 inches tall. Weighing around 125 pounds (57 Kgs), the robot will be capable of moving at a speed of 5mph (8kmph), and in place of a face, there will be a screen.
The Tesla website has already listed the robot and states that the humanoid robot will be capable of performing tasks that are “unsafe, repetitive or boring”. Musk said that the robot with a human-like appearance would carry out the work people like to do least, with “profound implications for the economy.”
It is only the next logical step for Tesla which is already the world’s largest robotics and it could even use its own team of mechanical, electrical, controls and software engineers to help the company leverage its AI expertise beyond their vehicle fleet.
Musk emphasised that the humanoid robot should not be seen as “dystopian” and rather it could be a friend.
The Tesla Bot is still in the earliest stages of development and we are not even sure that the ambitious project will even see the light of the day such as many other Tesla’s projects like the robotic snake-style chargers, a solar-powered network or battery swapping but one thing is sure that Elon Musk and his team will keep on coming up with new ideas.
